We use at least two different types of bread in our house and these vary between fresh, 3-4 days old and frozen so there's at least 6 different situations we usually need to adjust for with a conventional toaster and hence why this seemed worth it to us despite the steep price tag. From what they are claiming it shouldn't matter what bread we were using and how fresh we should be able to get consistent results without the need to constantly adjust the settings. Unfortunately it just doesn't work. There are seven settings 1 being the lightest and 7 the darkest. I use Woolworths/Coles white sourdough thin cut and '1' barely browns my toast at all, I guess what you would expect, but '2' browns it just a bit too much, with slight burnt crust in areas and '3' makes the whole toast hard and again with some burnt edges. God knows what would happen at 4 or above I don't dare try. It also doesn't toast evenly, it's the least in the centre and then gradually toasts more the closer you go to the edges. Oh and the 'sourdough' feature just keeps it down for a bit longer which for me just burnt it more. My wife uses thicker fruit toast, frequently from frozen and she has the opposite problem. '3' looks like it toasts it ok but frequently leaves the very centre cold so she has to use the 'bit more' button once or twice. I really really wanted this to work but unfortunately it has been very dissapointing.

We were really excited to purchase after discussing with Breville representatives at Myer Melbourne during an information night. The technology and theory sounded exactly what we desired after a very disappointing experience with De Longi toaster and kettle. Unfortunately, the Eye Q was a great let down. Toast came out varying shades on every piece and every side, burning crusts but under cooking in parts. Not what we’d expect from a $50 toaster let alone a $650 one. The elements seemed to light up differently despite the shades and that it was the same piece of bread in that slot. We returned and am waiting for a replacement hoping it will work this time. Could be a $650 gimmick, scam…. but we’ll see.
