I’ve been watching the Fold series for a few years and always walked away thinking the same thing: brilliant inside, awkward outside. The old cover screen was tall and narrow, so you ended up opening the phone just to type a message. The Fold8 finally fixes that. Samsung has gone with a wider, passport-style shape, and the 5.5-inch cover screen now has a proper 10:16 ratio. That means WhatsApp, email and banking apps can be done one-handed without unfolding anything, which is how most of my day actually looks. Open it up and you get a 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED screen running at 120Hz with up to 3,000 nits peak brightness. For anyone who works off a phone between meetings, that’s a small tablet in your pocket. Two apps side by side, a spreadsheet next to a Teams chat, or a long document you can actually read without zooming. Add Samsung DeX and Galaxy AI features like Now Nudge and automated app actions, and it starts to feel like a work tool rather than a toy. What surprises me most is the build. Unfolded, it’s just 4.5mm thick, and it weighs 201g, which is lighter than many standard flagship phones. The inner screen sits under Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3 and it carries an IP48 rating, so a bit of Joburg dust or a splash shouldn’t end it. Under the hood it runs the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy with 12GB of RAM, so multitasking and gaming shouldn’t be an issue. The 4,800mAh battery now charges at 45W wired, plus wireless and reverse charging, which matters when loadshedding or a long day leaves you scrambling for a plug. It’s not perfect. Samsung dropped the telephoto lens, so you get a 50MP main and a 50MP ultrawide only. Reviewers still rate the photos highly, but if zoom is your thing, it’s worth knowing. And at R40,999 for the 256GB model, it’s a serious purchase. That’s exactly why I’d love to win one. With seven years of Android and security updates promised, this isn’t a phone you’d replace in two years. It’s a long-term work and life device, and the Fold8 is the first version where I’d use the folded and unfolded modes equally rather than putting up with one to get the other. Rating: 4.5/5. Smart redesign, light, powerful and built to last. Only the missing zoom lens and the price stop it getting full marks.
